By the way, why is it so easy for the media to see, say, back room abortions as a symptom of prohibitions on abortion but not see stories like this in the same light.

    Strange that the emergency doctor said they had no alcohol on their breath. I would have thought that you could smell it even if someone were drinking only pure ethanol mixed with water.

    Josh,

    The alcohol in the hand sanatizer is probably wood alcohol (methyl alcohol) which is different from ethyl alcohol (which is what people drink)and can be toxic to humans even in fairly small doses. This is what is generally used for things like rubbing alcohol or sterno. It likely doesn't smell the same on the breath as ethyl alcohol.

    Ummmm, Warren? They ARE seeing them in the exact same light.

    Both are "endemic" results of some political policy they object to.

    They go from being trivial statistics into a "growing chorus" of problems due to the policy.

    Annnk, sorry, Matt. Speculation wrong, investigation good (from the wiki):

    The active ingredient in hand sanitizers may be isopropanol, ethanol, n-propanol, or povidone-iodine.

    and

    Common non-alcohol, rinse-free hand sanitizer brands use either small concentrations of the nitrogenous cationic surface-acting agent benzalkonium chloride or the chlorinated aromatic compound triclosan or povidone-iodine.

    I'd presume (lol, ya, speculating) that the thing making them sick is much more likely the additives than the actual alcohols, assuming they're drinking ethanol-based ones in the first place, of course. Not sure that there aren't a fair number stupid enough to not know that it's ONLY the ethanol-based ones which they'd be after, either...

    Certainly a case of Darwin-in-action, and not something that concerns me.

    The real problem with society is that it tends to protect the morons who should be culled from the gene pool in the natural human lifespan in Nature.

    More simply:

    Too much tiger food.
    Not enough tigers.
    WE NEED MORE TIGERS!

    BTW, abuse of triclosan is creating triclosan resistant bacteria in the home, which means that, when someone IS in their home with an immune illness, and NEEDs to actually HAVE a bacteria-free environment, they won't be able to get it.

    You should NEVER use triclosan-based "antibacterial" soaps in the home.

    Marijuana and the synthetic "herbal blends" crap are still the drugs of choice for teens. This hand sanitizer story is irrelevant.

    @Matt, no the alcohol in hand sanitizer is not wood alcohol, it is ethyl alcohol, usually from 57 - 62%. Read the label.

    Alcohol on the breath is from the alcohol getting into the air sacs in the lungs. It isn't a measure of how the alcohol got into the body (rectum, drinking, IV), but a measure of how much alcohol is in the bloodstream. That's how those police roadside breath testers are supposed to work.
    This story is completely ridiculous. Kids have access to alcohol from older friends/relatives, convenience stores that don't check ID, Mom and Dad's liquor cabinet, etc.
    Remember the stupid vodka tampons? Yeah, same thing.

    @marco73, granted, that is how breath tests work. But there are other odor indicators that are not there, if you take the alcohol some other way.

    You can usually tell from someone's breath whether they were drinking beer or scotch, right? That is because the smell of the liquid is in the mouth, throat, stomach (through burps and reflux), even lips and face. Well if the person was drinking some other way - you would only get a very mild smell of the alcohol from the lungs. It might not be noticeable. Though I doubt alternate drinking works all that well, just heard that it is done.

    Not only that, but I have it on good authority that the Castro brothers have sent numerous hit squads to the U.S. in recent months. Some experts have said the recent defections of actors and athletes are just a clever ruse. In fact, honest defectors usually announce their defections openly and do not disappear. If they don't announce through their sports agent, who tells us what team picked them up, they announce it through their business agent, who tells us what sponsors his client is shilling for. These last few batches of defectors are invisible or using stand-ins. This all proves that Cuba plans on killing Marco Rubio and other Florida neocons, followed by a quick air and sea invasion of Miami. The Castro brothers have reportedly been negotiating the terms of their S. Florida conquest with Obama's CIA, so it's not a crazy rumor. And, everyone knows Obama thinks he's better off without Miami area voters and would love to give away all those offshore oil fields. Oil and coal are evil you know. Spread the word people, it's time we launched a preventive war against Cuba, to avoid another conflict.
