What strikes me is the continued focus on "our people" and "OUR community". What would be the reaction if this list were tight to a white group, say someone white supremacist? It would be branded as exclusionary and elitist and racist.

Be apparently, to "restore our people to their traditional greatness" is to be lauded if you are black, but to be feared and attacked if you are white.

It seems to me to be, more than anything, about creating and developing a separate, idealized black culture/state. It says nothing about promoting unity within or between the races, or about building a strong America, etc.

It's separatist, continuing to foster the "us vs. them" mentality which seems so prevalent in so much of the racial rhetoric these days

Mega dittos on "Thankfulness". I've argued that point years ago on other blogs, particularily in reference to countries like Chad & Niger where a woman is worth less than a cow & untold # of kids are kidnapped daily for slavery.

Imani (Faith)
To believe with all our heart in
1)our people,
2)our parents,
3)our teachers,
4)our leaders and
5)the righteousness and victory of our struggle.

Let's try that again with modern day black pop-culture role-models:
Imani (Faith)
To believe with all our heart in
1)our plantation -- like gangsta-rappers who keep it real by telling like it is in the hood, i.e. "don't snitch", "don't act white" and "never, ever be an Uncle Tom" (how's that for a perversion of who the character Uncle Tom really was?)
2)our overworked single-moms or welfare moms -- give Bill Cosby credit for not backing down from his campaign against ignorant & self-defeating attitudes, likewise most working-class two-parent families don't tolerate "woe-is-me" victism, perfering to instill hard-work & self-discipline
3)our teachers' unions & NEA -- need I say more
4)our Jesse Jacksons & Al Sharptons -- Duke Lacrosse team & Jena Six comes to mind
5)the righteousness and victory of our struggle -- what struggle?? Like no other race ever struggles to support their families? I guess it's referring to the slavery, in that case, buck up & apply ourselves to be worthy of Frederick Douglass, George W. Carver, Mde Johnson and countless others who paved the way w/ blood, sweat & tears for MLK and any other to pursue their dreams. And when Da man comes offering handouts in return for political favors, run! Do not walk away.

P.S, thanks for no longer displaying mail addresses!

I love your new set of principles, but would add one more:

Anti-Nannyism: acceptance of the principle that every adult knows better than anyone else what is good for him/her, and that it is not the place or right of government officials or anyone else to be "their brother's keeper". A good neighbor accepts each person's right to make all of his own risk/reward decisions for himself.

Now let's start a contest to think of a name for our new holiday. Hey, if the people behind Kwanzaa get to just make one up, then so can we!

Oh, it's Marxist, all right. But is it really so pernicious for Black Americans, especially in the historical context of the 60's, to set aside a time to meditate on such principles as faith in our leaders, and responsibility to the collective? It's really only skeevy on a large scale, e.g. if the state is enforcing it. One-on-one, it's really quite lovely.

And another thing. My grand father came here from Latvia, my grand mother was born here to parents who came here from Russia. My other grandparents were both born here to parents who came here from Poland. For the 15-20 centuries prior to that, their families moved around Europe periodically. Before that, they came from the middle east.

Val, I'm pretty sure that is Swahili. This just adds another layer of absurdity to Kwanzaa, since the blacks in America (the ancestors of the slaves) are from West Africa, but Swahili is an East African language.

Pretending Swahili is something that has anything to do with American blacks's heritage is like studying Egyptian history in honor of black history month.

Just curious: in which language are those kwanzaa value categories named? I am confused, having done business with innumerable people who actually live on that continent, and there isn't any two of them that share the same native tongue.

"...slavery wasn't a mistake that the slaves made, it was foisted on them."

By other blacks.

There. I fixed that for you, AMW.
