i think the available land has been subdivided so many times, that lots are just postage stamp size. And even if the local governments became extremely developer friendly all of sudden, the public infrastructure wouldn't support it.

I've heard this argument before. It seems to me that in the case of Los Angeles you are ignoring geography. Los Angeles is just damn crowded. The available land has been subdivided so many times, that lots are just postage stamp size. And even if the local governments became extremely developer friendly all of sudden, the public infrastructure wouldn't support it. LA imports almost all of its drinking water, and don't even get me started on the traffic problems.

Of course, there is affordable housing. Just move to the high desert - Littlerock, Lancaster, or Palmdale. There is tons of development occuring up there. Yep, you can get yourself a house on a 5 acre lot for the price of a 5000' sqft lot in LA. As long as you don't mind a 100 to 150 mile daily commute and 110 deg summer heat, it's great.

So what you're saying is that there are fewer palms that need to be greased in Dallas than there are in L.A.. Give Dallas time, I'm sure they will catch-up.
