Re: Good News. While I don't agree with the ruling on this case, I wish people would stop acting like the court said anything about "hate speech," which of course isn't an actual crime in California - or anywhere else. This was purely a case about restricting speech on hostile work environment lines, and if a private employer had been involved I would say this was the right outcome. Since the employer was the government, I think there should have been a higher standard against suppressing speech, but please don't continue the lie that there were allegations of "hate speech" involved when there weren't. Doesn't seeing someone claim that "marriage" and "natural family" have been declared hate speech set off your BS-meter, even when it has to do with California?

Anyway, check out this and this for more information.

"The rights of non-adults is a complicated issue, but precedent has been set that student speech is generally protected unless it is significantly disruptive of the school's functioning."

This may be true. But, a) he WAS an adult (18-years old at the time), b) he was on a PUBLIC sidewalk (not the school grounds...which is public property too BTW), and c) he was told (and later punished) by a government employee because the government employee didn't like what his banner said.

That is the case in a nutshell. This is a very sad ruling indeed.

What happens to the next guy that shows a banner that says "Doobies 4 Jesus"? Hmmm. Does he mean "doobies" or does he mean "Doobies". This is a pure B.S. decision.

I would add to this the attacks on talk radio, including threats of a rebirth of the Fairness Doctrine, by those upset that talk radio is telling people what's in the immigration bill.
