Utility company subsidized housing is preventing it's residents' access to workspace in which they might financially meet their own needs with projects to integrate financially and culturally into the local, regional community; while municipally initiated annual reporting, carried out by housing administration, misrepresents residents' needs. Addressing a graduating class at St. Charles' School of Accounting, Arthur Anderson once said; our survival would depend on utilizing accountant services. One accountant I asked for help, said he'd only help me if any attorney referred me to him. An attorney I've been seen several times by, said he wouldn't do anything for me without my being represented to him. Another legal advisor asked; where, living in San Francisco, I might find case management without a conflict of interest against me? they replied, "Maybe Oakland." Travelers advisories ought to warn of the hopeless trap that housing is locally. I was once warned but couldn't believe I wouldn't be able to find the help I need here. A business law professor told me once only the people inside institutions have a legal right to demand changes in policy that affects them: Eleven years ago I arrived in SFCA to raise money to pay off a large debt; but've been disabled by public health housing's "self-policing" system that seems defeatingly abusive and client-proof. Disabled people without representation are emergencies.

I have to admit that I met an accountant just before Enron tanked that said "We used to do enough work that if the company went bankrupt we wouldn't get sued, now we know we'll get sued no matter what we do, so if the company's too big to go bankrupt we don't really audit them; but I feel sorry for those small companies because we really make them work for their audit." It was pretty clear that attitude was leading to a bad future.

I don't have a solution, although I think a good starting point would be to refuse to buy stock in companies (like Enron, or even Google) that routinely don't give out important financial statements.

Maybe the punishment is too severe for the Enron incident, but when you throw in WorldCom, Sunbeam, Global Crossing and others, could it just be karma catching up?

When I started my accounting career in the '70s, I was amazed to learn that auditors were doing as much consulting as they were auditing. If Enron was paying more to Andersen Consulting than to AA, as has been reported, where would Andersen Worldwide's allegience really lie?

It is sad, though, that the damage of such wrongdoing does spread far beyond the relatively small circle of actual wrongdoers.
