As inclined as we are to reflexively defend Wal-Mart as the enemy of our enemy (which it is), it's worth bearing in mind that they've also been among the worst offenders for many of the abuses we decry. For every government body that's abused its power for the purpose of doing harm to Wal-Mart, there's at least one other government body abusing it's power to benefit Wal-Mart. Not to mention that Wal-Mart has historically been among the most craven and brazen rent-seekers in America...the boons handed to it by various governments have not been passively accepted but rather very actively pursued.

Wal-Mart is not the primary actor in the conversion of government from servant to master...but it is unquestionably a co-conspirator.
