I have voiced this very opinion for many years. Growing up in South Florida gives you a somewhat different perspective. But I noticed that many Cubans in the US fight easing of restrictions very hard. After all, the Battista regime can never regain power if we ease up on Castro. That and the fact that all those Cubans that refuse to become US citizens (Gloria Esteban) might actually have no excuse to stay here.

I'm surprised more Libertarians haven't come to this point of view, primarily since it seems like an encroachment of government to prohibit people to trade with others, regardless of the countries involved. Am I missing something?

I agree. But one shouldn't expect too much either. Castro doesn't allow more influence from abroad that he thinks he need, one indication of that is that he recently began to kick out the international partners in the joint ventures that got started in the early 90s. At the same time, he has started to deepen his relationship with his friends (Chavez' Venezuela, Iran, China, etc.).

I've got some posts about Cuba on my blog.

Hello Warren,

I think you are right, the normalization or relations with Cuba (more on that later) have the "electoral college" obstacle. I think it is true that the majority of us, Americans of Cuban descent, are contrary to that normalization. But what exactly that normalization would be? Currently Castro can buy food, medicines and many other things from USA and without limit. Then what is exactly the problem? Maybe the problem is that he has to pay in cash, there are not credits. Because it is not true that the embargo had no results. There is one big result: Castro owes money to everyone but us, Simply put, Castro had traditionally used credits to finance his regime. Should the "normalization" go to the extreme that the American taxpayer will pay for Castro's Island-farm?

Good thought. I've often thought that if our last 40 years of embargo isn't going to get rid of Castro, the only thing that'll get him is death. Ending the embargo might actually help us to have decent relations when that day comes.

Besides, I want some friggin' cigars!
