I came across your blog about the liquor licenses and was wondering if you had any suggestions for me because I am in the process of opening a wine bar/cafe and don’t know how to find out if I can get a liquor license in Boca Raton, Florida. Where should I start? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I just stumbled across your blog page and was interested and relieved to find that even a person with extensive experience with business still has a lot headaches! I own a small irrigation business which is only two years old. I pull my hair out just with my measly bit of paperwork. So it makes me feel better to know I’m not alone. Sorry! I spent my excise tax last year for winter survival and now I owe, owe, owe! Any ideas for getting out of a business mess?

Normally I'd make a snarky point about the fact that you _do_ work for the government (since your business is a government contractor), but all of these annoying points are about your relationships with state and local governments (that you don't work for), not the federal government.

And yes, I can certainly see how it'd be annoying. Those of us whose businesses are relatively immune to this sort of issue (I, for example, don't resell government licenses, provide services to the government, sell tangible goods, or maintain a tax nexus in states where sales of nontangible services are subject to sales tax, and my business is unlikely to ever own real estate or vehicles in states where I don't reside at the time, so my government-relations burden is only about four times greater than a W2 employee's) can sometimes overlook the insane amount of complexity that can get involved, even as we agree with you about the general underlying principles of equity.

I really appreciate your blog, especially when you discuss your business. I don’t think the average person really understands how the government has its finger in every pie and what kind of effect this has on running a small business. If you work in a big company or own a big company lots of these tasks are delegated away to specialists for a price (money, trust, time) of course.
