After exchanging numerous emails with a Liberal friend of mine, I finally challenged him:

"So you think people are simply too dumb to run their own lives?"

His answer was along the lines of "Yes and without intelligent people making their decisions, they'll choose poorly."

Then I threw out the kicker:

"What if you're NOT one of the intelligent people?"

My son - a college freshman - sent
the Progressives are too Conservative to Like Capitalism posting to me.

I took the time to read it and
felt some kinship to the writer.
(I don't usually read Blogs.)

Sometimes I feel like I can no longer
relate to the general public - not
that I'm more educated or above
anyone else but I shake my head often
at what I hear people talking about
in public. I have to turn the network
news stations off sometimes when
I hear about public opinion which indicates
our general population has forgotten
about the beauty of capitalism and
its link to what is true freedom.

What has happened to choice and consequences?
Freedom to make a bad choice?

I have commented in other venues that the various theories that were developed during the 19th century, which resulted in the progressive movement, among others, of the latter part of that century and the 20th, were actually reactions to the truly revolutionary doctrines of individual rights and constitutional government put forward by the Enlightenment.

It is no accident that the same progressives who were constantly demanding "change" when that involved more statist activity are now so adament that nothing can be changed when the proposals are to scale back the monopolies of state controlled pensions and schools.

The object of progressive theory is only nominally the improvement of the subject at hand. The real and basic objective in all cases is to increase state power and decrease the scope of personal choices which might upset the plans of those in charge.

Statists always prefer statist solutions, especially when they are the ones who will most likely be in charge of the decision making process.

James Taggert, in "Atlas Shrugged", echoes this idea when he pleads at one point for everything to just stop, no more changes and inventions, just stop so people can catch their breath.

You should post this over at Left2right. The intellectual and moral pretensions over there are knee deep in...well, you know.
